FAQs

  • How much are programs?

Week-long teen programs are $1,100. This includes all food as well as supplies for your program (ex: art supplies for the Art on the Water program). If you would like financial assistance, we have options to help our programs fit your family’s budget.

Full payment is due upon acceptance into the program.

  • What do you do for safety?

Safety is our number one priority. Our vessels and crew meet, and in many ways exceed, US Coast Guard requirements. We complete medical training at least once a year to ensure that our crew are up-to-date on first aid, CPR, AED, and Epi-Pen procedures. We also operate with a Red Cross Certified Lifeguard aboard. Our crew undergo strict background checks and are SafeSport certified. We have protocols in place for emergencies and go over these protocols and procedures the first day the students are aboard.

  • Where do programs take place?

Student programs take place from 7am Monday until noon Friday aboard our famous Concordia sloop Arcadia. For the duration of the week, we stay within Long Island Sound and anchor each night.

  • Where do the trips depart from?

Most trips are round-trip from Oyster Bay Marine Center, located at 5 Bay Avenue in Oyster Bay, NY.

Our “Maritime Memories” trip will depart from and return to Greenport, NY.

The July “Legends of the Sea” trip will begin in Oyster Bay, NY and end in Greenport, NY.

  • I'm from out of town: how do I get to you?

We are fortunate to be within walking distance to a LIRR station which means we are easily accessible via public transport. From JFK, you can take the AirTrain to Jamaica and change there for a LIRR train to Oyster Bay. LaGuardia offers a free bus to Jamaica. There are also several convenient options for car services.

  • Are the programs graded or for credit?

The educational programs we offer are akin to an elective you might sign up for at your school, but we don’t grade or collect any of your projects.

In lieu of grades, we do present our participants with a voyage certificate before departing which states the program they completed as well as nautical miles traveled. Students often use this certificate for applications to honors programs and colleges.

  • What is your cell phone policy?

We have a no-cell-phones policy for the entirety of the week. Our focus is a low-tech, non-stem experience where participants are encouraged to be part of a team in a unique environment.

A designated shore support person is available 24/7 in case a parent needs to reach the ship.

  • What about students who want to take pictures?

We want students to go home with photos and videos to remember their trip, so each student is assigned a waterproof digital camera and an SD card to use during time aboard. After the trip, students will be emailed a link to an album where they can view all the photos from their trip and download them for free.

  • What is it like living on the boat?

Life aboard Arcadia is really comfortable, especially for a summer camp! We have bunks for six students and two crew: this means we have a student-teacher ratio of 3:1. Once aboard, you will be assigned a bunk for the week, which is about the size of a twin bed. Cabins are shared with you and other students, but there is ample space for you to store your belongings for the week. We cook meals together in a large galley, and eat together at a table in the main salon (which is also great for playing games after dinner!).

  • What does a typical day aboard look like?

Stirling Harbor Foundation reserves the right to cancel the program in case of bad weather, mechanical problems, or other unforeseen circumstances. In such cases, your payment will be returned. If you cancel 30 days prior to sailing time, your payment, less a 25% administrative fee, will be returned. No refund will be given if you cancel within 30 days of sailing time.
